Italy is the world’s largest wine producer! As a topic of conversation, both football, pasta and fashion is by far oversized by wine, as it for Italians is the epitome of history, culture and good taste. Wine is always on the lips of italian, and of course to every meal there must follow wine.

Although Umbrian wine earlier on was quite unknown to most, the situation is changing – and the area is well on its way to becoming famous for its excellent wines.

The fact is that Umbria has very favorable growth conditions for the production of wine, and is blessed with a history of wines that dates back to ancient times. But it is especially the white wine of the region, made on Grechetto grapes, which has so far enjoyed recognition and popularity, not only in Italy but also in many other places in the world. White wine counts for about 60 percent of all wine produced in Umbria. But the red wine of the region is on the move, not least thanks to brands such as Colpetrone, Arnoldo Caprai, Anronelli, Bea and Tabarrini.

A proficient and dutiful approach to producing wine is part of Umbria’s wine identity. While Tuscany and other nearby regions excel in volume production, Umbria offers a rich selection of grape varieties, wine styles and price ranges..
Until recently, Montefalco was one of these unknown wine-producing cities. It is only one among many small Umbrian towns, and although great writers like Hermann Hesse and Gabriele d’Annunzio praised the city in the early 1900s, it remained an overlooked small town for the vast majority. This is not the case anymore.

We can recommend a visit to the Signal vineyard on the outskirts of Montefalco. The place is owned by the brothers Cesarini and Sartori, who after a long career in Italy’s electrical industry more than ten years ago took over the vineyard. The two brothers have automated and modernized Signé in such a way that many today believe it is one of Europe’s most modern wineries in control of all the processes.

Signed hand picked and hand grapes have won several awards – something that a few years ago was totally unheard of for a vineyard in Umbria. But the lush fields along with the excellent grapes make the wines in the area now really start competing with Italy’s absolute best wine.
