ORVIETO

Orvieto is located on the top of the hill with steep edges around the entire city. There is a road for cars, but walking can also take the cable car.

Talien’s biggest wine fair takes place in Orvieto, which is especially known for its white wine, Orvieto Classico, which is also traded in Denmark. Together with Greve-in-Chianti, Bra and Positano, Orvieto helped launch the “slow-by” movement Cittaslow, inspired by the Slow Food movement.

The cathedral is the most distinctive building in Orvieto. Its western facade is a splendor of colored ornaments, and was created by architect Lorenzo Maitani from 1310. The facade is considered his main work. In the cathedral’s right-hand chapel, Capella Nuova, one of Orvieto’s greatest works of art is found: Luca Signorelli’s colorful frescoes, depicting the Antichrist’s sermon, the resurrection of the flesh, the condemned are thrown into hell and received by the demons and chosen in paradise. Three of these contain a number of naked figures. and the Antichrist’s sermon has portraits of, among others, Luca Signorelli, Fra Angelico and Dante.
In Orvieto you can also find the Bolsena corporal with an accompanying reliquary crown, located in a glass mount in the left side chapel of the cathedral.

One thing, however, makes Orvieto ten something quite special – and it’s going to be underground to experience!
A tour along a very easy route makes it possible to get to know Orvieto’s underground world created by its ancient inhabitants during such around the 2500th uninterrupted grave that has made Orvieto today a maze of caves hidden underneath city streets and houses.

The guided tour to “Orvieto Undergound” is therefore the best way to get in touch with this new, very unusual cultural aspect of a city rich in history and artistic jewels.

In Orvietto you can also experience two large deep wells. Pozzo della Cava is the one. It was first digged by the Etruscans, and later extended from 1527-1530 under Pope Clement VII. The well was closed in 1646 and was first rediscovered after being forgotten for several centuries. In connection with Pozzo della Cava, there are several other caves that have been used as a wine cellar. The other great well is the 62 meter deep Pozzo di San Patrizio (Saint Patrik’s well) which you can go down to the bottom by following the two spiral staircases. This well was also started under Pope Clement VII in 1529.
